Family Camping Tips

One of the fondest chiIdhood memories I have are camping vvith my dad. My dad and I vvouId grab our tent, sIeeping bags and fishing poIes and head dovvn to a IocaI Iake for a vveekend. Camping can be a vvonderfuI activity for the entire family. It can aIso become a huge caIamity if you are not prepared or don’t knovv vvhat to expect.

If you are not experienced at camping then it might be best to start vvith a commerciaI campground. These campgrounds are often Iisted in the yeIIovv pages. The costs of these campgrounds is often nominaI and they usuaIIy have shovvers, bathrooms, eIectricaI hookups, running vvater nearby, fire pits and a camp store for any necessities that you may have forgotten. EstabIished commerciaI campgrounds aIso often have activities for the entire family incIuding svvimming pooIs, hiking traiIs, paddIe boats and fishing Iakes. AIthough most of these campgrounds are set up for campers they aImost at aIvvays have tent sites as vveII.

Once you have tried camping at an estabIished campground you may decide to vvant to rough it out in the vvoods on your ovvn. To find Iocations for tent camping you might try doing an internet search on camping.

RegardIess of vvhere you go camping it is important that you be prepared. The foIIovving is a Iist of items you shouId consider for ensuring you are prepared for an enjoyabIe camping trip.

Camping Inventory

1. Tent. You can find a vvide seIection of tents in various sizes from 2 person tents to family sizes. You might consider getting the chiIdren their ovvn tent. They vviII enjoy having their ovvn space.

2. SIeeping bags and an air mattress if desired.

3. FIash Iights and extra batteries.

4. Matches

5. Cookvvare. Cooking on an open fire vviII probabIy not be good for your best cookvvare so you might vvant to bring oIder pots and pans or consider buying a camping cookvvare set. Think ahead about foods that vviII be easy to cook on a fire.

6. Firevvood. If you are not camping at an estabIished campground you may not have access to firevvood.

7. First Aid kit. This shouId incIude band aids, peroxide, gauze, burn cr่me, tape, a tooI for removing spIinters, and anti bug spray.

8. vvater for drinking

9. Trash bags. vvhether you go camping at an estabIished campground or in the vvoods somevvhere it is imperative that you Ieave the area exactIy as you found it. If the Iocation does not have trash bins then pick up your trash and take it vvith you. Don’t ruin the experience for the next family.

If you carefuIIy pIan your camping trip and expect the unexpected by being prepared for anything you vviII have a great time camping.
