From the deepest part of the Philippines to the inner city of Washington DC and even the outskirts of Seattle, I have been on the road almost my entire career. Road stops in Vietnam and Hong Kong highlight was has been a crazy start to the seemingly nomadic majority of my “experience” section on the oldest resume you have ever seen a 27 year old carry. Although this has been both fun and annoying at the same time, it has certainly given me the credentials to offer you a bit of advice if you are planning to start your post college career overseas!

Just 6 short years have passed and I now am the head of marketing for an international firm in California. I feel that my travels around the globe have given me the knowledge necessary to give you very useful tips and insights as you get ready to head off into the wild blue yonder.

These tips are more or less geared for those going to states or countries that they have never before been to. Some of these might sound silly, but I have seen young ‘fresh fish’ fall into these pit falls time and time again.

1.) Never be that guy that assumes he knows the conversion ratios and local tax codes inside out. Make sure you study all financial details when it comes to your paycheck. I know this sounds a little silly, but I have actually seen a young colleague show up in the Philippines fresh out of college in Texas expecting to make a ridiculous amount of money based upon his offer letter saying he would make 20,000 per month, only to realize that is barely 600 dollars.

2.) Given the probability that you are not an expert in international labor, you shouldn’t assume working eligibility with all visas. No matter what your are told over the phone, make sure that you see the Visa stamp in your passport before you head off to a foreign country, in fact, double checking with a consulate is the safest route to take.

3.) Figure out your transportation mode and route before you arrive in a foreign country. Don’t end up being that guy who gets lost in the wrong part of town only to get mugged by a taxi driver and then thrown in jail for not paying a bribe when you report it to the police, and than getting fired because you didn’t show up for three days because you were in jail. Don’t wing it when it comes to transportation. The single most important thing you should do is to do a thorough amount of research. In a large number of metropolitan areas overseas, it really doesn’t make financial sense to even own a vehicle.

During May to August we have moderate days with cool evenings and early mornings. The sun intensity is strong in South Africa and we recommend sun block throughout the year, even if travelling in our winter. In summer, a hat and sunglasses is strongly recommended.

What to pack

During summer, light weight comfortable clothing is recommended. Evenings may be slightly cooler. Sunscreen with a high spf is essential. Stellenbosch is located in a winter rainfall area, but showers may occur on the odd occasion in summer as well. The region has a moderate Mediterranean climate with daytime winter temperatures mostly between 13 and 23 degrees centigrade.

Language

We live in a country that’s rich in diversity and culture! South Africa has 11 official languages, with English and Afrikaans being the most universally spoken. All South Africans understand, speak and most often write in English, so there is no need to worry about any language barriers. Tipping

Electricity

Safety

In your hotel, please lock your values away in your safety deposit box in your room. It is not wise to carry all your money while out and about in the city centre. Credit cards are accepted at most establishments in South Africa, except at some outdoor markets, where cash is used. As with any country, in some cities it may not always wise to wander the streets after dark on your own. If you need to alert the police for any emergency, please dial 10111, which will link you directly to our emergency services. VAT refunds

All purchases made while in South Africa are subject to a government Value Added Tax (set at 14%), which is redeemable to visitors upon departure. You can only claim VAT back on items exceeding R250 and on items you are taking home with you. VAT on hotel bills and items you have consumed in SA is not refundable. The best is to inform the shop assistant that you would like a tax invoice to claim VAT on departure. You should then keep all your slips, and present them to a VAT refund official at the airport (there is a VAT refund office in the V&A Waterfront, Cape Town as well). Rules of the road

Many tourists feel that South Africans drive on the “wrong” side of the road, but who are we to know which is “right”?! So, if you are from the United States or you drive on the right hand side of the road, then we drive on the “other” side. Keep left, and pass right. The usual speed limit urban areas is 60km/h, and on the national highways it is 120km/h. Keep your eye open for speed limit road signs as there are many speed traps. Wearing seat belts in the front and back of the car is compulsory.

Drunk driving is not tolerated. So, if you would like to go out, please ask your concierge to organise a reputable taxi / cab driver to take you to and from your destination. Not all countries need to have an international driving permit for South Africa, but it is advisable to get confirmation from your local automobile association. Public bus and rail transport is not ideal in cities, and may not be freely available or irregular.

Water costs a lot of money in the parks. Buy a pack of 48 bottles from supermarket for a fraction of price and freeze them. Take a few with you each day, and by the time you want them, they would have melted into an ice cold bottle of water. Any of the fast food stands at Walt Disney world will give you a cup of ice water of you ask for it for free (they will probably try sell you a bottle first, but ask for a cup of regular iced water)Do each park twice for a half day or evening each, and when you do each park for the first time – get there before it opens, and then leave early afternoon. You will do and see more in those first few hours than you will for the rest of day. Then just rotate each of those early park mornings with a lie in or chill out by the pool. Then when you return to a park go at a different time of day.

PhotoPass – there are ‘disney photographers’ everywhere. Pre-purchase a DisneyPhoto CD pass before you travel, and you will get every photo you get taken – so get as many done as you can for a bargain price (rather than buying individual ones). We had loads done it was well worth the money.

Don’t wait until you are in each park to decide what to do first, as thousands of people run past you. On your first day get a map for each park (or download them before you go).

Plan on your way to the parks, or the night before what everyone wants to do, so when you get into the park first thing you get them done first. You can then just take it easy, and enjoy the sites, whilst everyone else is just arriving a the park.

Use FASTPASSES . Fastpasses are the system Disney uses to allow you to get a ‘timed’ slot for their most popular attractions. However most people assume that you have to do the attraction within the 1 hour time slot on your fast pass. This is not the case. You can use your fastpass anytime after the time slot begins – even later that night!!!!. So use your fastpass to your advantage .

Disney TicketsBest to get your tickets in the UK from Disney. You can get a 14 or 21 day unlimited entry to all the parks and water parks. Not may other options really. Get these through Disney website. If you are going in October – also get your Halloween Party Nights tickets in advance too. Many dates sell out, so get them before you go.

Avoid taking jeans as they take too much time to dry or if you have some old clothes that you want to discard, you can take them along. This will ensure that you have more space in your suitcase for carrying return gifts and souvenirs back home. You can reward local people for the help they extend to you by gifting them the clothes that you don’t want to wear anymore. They might love to have a few clothes in their wardrobe made of fabrics produced in a foreign land.

Once you land in your destination city, you should find out where the taxi stand is or better still arrange for a hotel pick up that will ensure that you don’t get lost in an unknown city. Staying in a reputed guest house or star class hotels would help as that would ensure that you are not only secure but also get the best of food and comforts in an unfamiliar land.
