Saint-Jerome of Quebec

Being the 15th city of Canada according to population, with a number of about 65,000 inhabitants, Saint-Jerome of Quebec is a perfect place for young people to travel too. Not too crowded or too noisy either; a perfect city to spend a year.

Hot Spots

If you are into gigs and stuff like that, you will have the opportunity of going to some summer festivals here which are very much appreciated by everybody. Also check Melancon Arena for concerts and shows. In matters of museum Saint-Jerome has Vieux-Palais which is a modern art museum which also included a public library and Contemporary Art Museum of Laurentides. You can make your life as an au pair very interesting and even the best experience of your life!

Accommodation You are likely to get your own room in the host family’s home. However, after you finish your contract you might want to stay longer in the city and will need to look for accommodation. From my point of view your best option is to get a studio. It is easier and cheaper this way. The rent for a studio in Saint-Jerome is about 400 $ per month. If you want more space, you will have to pay a larger sum of money.

Nightlife Some might think that for such a small city, the night life is dull, but wait and see what pubs and clubs it has and then think again! Dieu du Ciel, Sir Winston Churchill Pub, Hurley’s Irish Pub, Luba Lounge and Brutopia are just some of the places you need to go to and have fun! Enjoy a beer or go and dance the whole night long. Enjoy your youth while you can! Also, check discussion forums for au pairs on the internet and see what others like you prefer.

Jobs Looking for a job while you go there as an au pair? I suggest several websites where you can look for jobs, besides your basic one of au pair, such as this, this, this and this. Air Canada Flight is a good option

Air Canada is headquartered in Montreal and is undoubtedly Canada’s largest flag-bearing airline. It carries people to over 90 destinations and cargo to a 150. It has a range of vacation packages on offer. Its primary base is the Montreal-Pierre Elliott Trudeau International Airport. Hubs are also present at Toronto Pearson International Airport and Vancouver International Airport. The Calgary International Airport serves as a mini-hub. It has Air Canada Jazz as its regional partner and premium jet charter called Air Canada Jetz.

Its mandatory that all departure flights for within Canada check in an hour before take-off. For those going to the USA its an hour and half and all international flights need to be checked in two hours ahead of departure. As with most airlines, an Air Canada Flight will allow you to carry on two pieces of baggage within 22lbs. Personal items such as briefcases, laptop computers, diaper bags and the like will be allowed. There are specific dimensions to stick to. Check in baggage varies depending on the kind of class you are travelling. Economy allows you two pieces a head that can weigh a maximum of 50lbs. Executive First gives you three items weighing a maximum of 70lbs. There will of course be a charge for any excess baggage that you carry on.

You will get pre-assigned seating options online or at check in. you could even select seats at the reservations stage where it is allowed. For international flights the legroom in seats for economy is 30 and 34 inches for North American and the international routes respectively.

For all local flights children below two years of age are allowed to travel free on the lap of an adult. For children below two years of age and traveling on the parent’s lap on international flights, only 10 per cent of the ticket will have to be purchased. As such there are no discounts for senior citizens, but accompanying tickets can be bought at a cheaper rate. For those carrying musical instruments, large ones can be accommodated on a purchased seat instead of being checked in.

Vancouver BC Canada Travel

Vancouver is one of the prettiest and friendliest cities on the west coast of North America.

The Gastown district is where we’ve stayed when we visited Vancouver. It’s where the city first started, and it still has cobble stone streets and many buildings left from the late 1800s. There is a steam clock you shouldn’t miss. It “pops off” with hoots and whistles every fifteen minutes, much to the delight of the crowds that will be gathered with you.

Gastown is geared for tourists, and it used to be that locals stayed away… but these days, it seems to be a pretty popular area with tourists and locals alike. It’s loaded with tons of souvenir shops where you can buy fantastic native art, but there are also lots of places to sit outside for coffee or drinks to watch the crowds go by. There are plenty of restaurants and clubs too.

Stanley park is one of the must sees of the city. You’ll be treated to gardens, city views, and great spots to stop and take pictures. You’ll also find one of the world’s largest aquariums here in the park.

Perhaps the most famous attraction within the park is the collection of totem poles. The Stanley Park First Nations Totem Poles are located in the park at Brockton Point. Don’t miss a drive or walk along the 5 mile long (8 km) seawall. There are also tennis courts, a cricket club, restaurants and a miniature railroad.

When we visited with kids, Science World Vancouver was a great hit with them. It was originally one of the pavilions of the World Fair Expo in 1986, and now it houses interactive science exhibits that are hits with all ages.

We liked the Museum of Vancouver and the Museum of Anthropology. I guess I should mention that we love native and primitive art, so that may color our judgement. They have fantastic collections of Pacific Northwest Coast First Nations masks and artifacts, and their explanations about the First Nations people were really terrific.

Just outside of the city you shouldn’t miss the Capilano Suspension Bridge. It’s only about ten minutes from Vancouver… through Stanley Park, over the Lion Gate, and up the road…. This 450 foot long (137 m) suspension bridge is 230 feet (70 m) above the ground and sways back and forth as you walk above the river and into the evergreen rainforest.

You have choices for transportation. There are public buses to get around the city, and the Sky Train which is a mostly above ground light rapid transit system. The Sea Bus also goes back and forth across the harbor. We had a rental car and drove around. There seemed to be plenty of public parking. You can also see the city from the water by taking a ferry ride.

You can visit anytime of the year. Winter is best for skiers, summer is great for hiking and water sports, and of course, you can visit museums and shop all year long. To get there you can fly to the international airport or drive from Seattle or other parts of Canada. You can even cruise in.
