Amsterdam is very cold in the winter but, it a great place to visit during the holidays. During Christmastime, you can see children dressed in black face as they assist St. Nick through the street parades of the city. It is a sight to see and amongst one of the most interesting places to go in the world during this time. The traditions are much different from other western countries. It is common to find travel writing that warns tourists from visiting during this time due to the rain and snow. However, this is what makes Amsterdam even more magical during this season.
Amsterdam is known world wide for its lack of laws governing the casual use of marijuana. It is not uncommon to know what to do or what to see when in a coffee shop. If curious, this is the place to do it because it is legal. This city also has one of the most adult places to go in the world- the relight district. Adult performers and entertainers line the windows advertising themselves out to the public. This is not a place for children and should be visited with care. Hire a guide who knows what to do and what to see in the area to avoid any possible unwanted attention.
Any travel guide or travel writing will mention that renting a bike is the way to discover the many canals of the city. Be careful that you know the what to do and what to see when traffic is coming your way when navigating the Amsterdam. Despite the abundance of bikes in the area, Amsterdam is of all the places to go in the world amongst the best for walking. Everyone walks here and it is a great way to feel like the local Dutch.
